Details Invoicing: Smart Disputes

Let AI take care of your dispute evidence with Stripe's Smart Disputes feature!

Smart Disputes is a Stripe feature designed to help automate and improve how payment disputes are handled, releasing July 2025. By leveraging Stripe’s machine learning and deep payment data, Smart Disputes can save you time and increase your chances of recovering revenue when disputes occur.

What is Smart Disputes?

Smart Disputes is an automated system built into Stripe that:

  • Submits evidence on your behalf when a dispute is filed

  • Uses AI trained on billions of dollars in dispute data to increase the likelihood of winning

  • Requires no additional setup or integration

When enabled, Stripe will automatically generate and submit evidence based on the transaction and account details it already has access to. This reduces the manual work involved in responding to disputes.

Benefits of Smart Disputes

  • Time-saving: No need to manually gather and submit evidence.

  • Better dispute outcomes: Stripe's AI uses historical patterns and best practices to optimize evidence submissions.

  • Zero integration required: Everything is built into your existing Stripe setup.

Costs and Fees

Smart Disputes operates on a pay-for-performance model:

  • Stripe retains 30% of the recovered amount as a fee if a dispute is won using Smart Disputes.

  • If a dispute is not won, there is no Smart Disputes fee.

  • Standard dispute fees charged by Stripe still apply in all cases, regardless of outcome.

Managing Smart Disputes

By default, Smart Disputes may be automatically enabled for connected Stripe accounts. When enabled:

  • Stripe will automatically handle evidence submission for you.

  • You can still view and track disputes through your Stripe Dashboard.

If you prefer to manage disputes yourself, you can disable auto-submission at any time.

How to Opt Out of Auto-Submission

  1. Log in to your Stripe Dashboard.

  2. Navigate to Settings > Payments > Disputes and Fraud.

  3. Look for the Smart Disputes section.

  4. Toggle off Auto-submit dispute evidence.

Even with auto-submission turned off, you’ll still have access to the evidence Stripe prepares and can manually submit it if you choose.

🗒️ Smart Disputes is available globally, but some regions may have auto-submission disabled by default. For example, Stripe accounts based in Canada or Malaysia will need to enable it manually.
